Downtown Charleston

If the historic charm of Charleston is what you're after, look no further than Downtown Charleston. As one of the most historic neighborhoods in South Carolina, Downtown Charleston is home to a wide variety of architectural styles, from colorful colonial homes to antebellum mansions. With a rich history dating back hundreds of years, this neighborhood offers a unique glimpse into the culture of the South. Originally named Charles Towne, in honor of King Charles II, the city of Charleston was settled in 1670 by the English on the banks of the Ashley River in an area known as Albermarle Point. The city was moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 and Charleston adopted its present name in 1783.  Take a stroll down the cobblestone streets and soak up the rich history of the area, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement.
